Carved sides, hidden storage. A 31-inch square lift-top coffee table: an ash veneer lid on a carved solid poplar band, over a hidden compartment.

The band beneath the lid is solid poplar, carved on every side into a row of plump, rounded lobes, and its corners roll round in thick curves. Finger joints and lighter and darker strips of wood stay visible under the lacquer, the honest mark of solid timber. The lid and the square plinth below are ash veneer over MDF, pale straw in tone, with long flowing grain.

Raise the lid and it rises 10.24 inches on metal lift arms, bringing a laptop or a plate closer to the sofa, over a compartment 28.35 inches square and 7.17 inches deep. The plinth is set well in, so the carved band seems to float above the floor. Try it with a cream sectional and a jute rug for a sunlit villa feel, or with dark velvet and lamplight for the evening.

For a matching natural wood look, set our Tolfa fluted beech half-moon side table at the end of the sofa.

Named after Canelli, a town on the Belbo river in the province of Asti, in the hills of southern Piedmont.

The idea

Carved poplar, pale ash lid.

Rounded lobes carved into a solid poplar band, a pale ash veneer lid that lifts, and room for throws and games hidden inside.

The details

Look closer. We did.

Photographed up close, because texture, seams and joinery are where quality shows.

Lobes in solid poplar

A close photo of the table's side: rounded lobes carved into the solid poplar band, finger joints and lighter strips in the wood, the ash lid above and the plain plinth set back below.

Before a cream sectional

In a sunlit room with a stone wall, the table stands on a jute rug in front of a cream corner sofa, its carved band floating over the smaller plinth.

Ash grain, straight down

The lid from directly above: pale straw ash with long flowing arches and fine open pores under a clear lacquer finish.

In the room

Square and low for a sofa.

At 31.1 inches square and 15.35 inches high, Canelli suits a two- or three-seat sofa or a sectional corner, with storage for remotes and games under the lid.
