Dark wood, warm brass. A tall 40-inch chest in near-black peppercorn elm veneer, with five full-width drawers and two antique-brass rings on each.
The peppercorn finish is wire-brushed, so the elm grain stays faintly visible as fine gray lines under a near-black, matte surface. It is elm veneer over solid wood and MDF, which keeps the tall panels straight. A slim mitered face frame surrounds the five drawers, and only the outer corners of the drawer bank are rounded, a small softening on a very straight piece.
Ten fixed rings in an antique-brass finish add small points of warm light down the front. Inside, the top drawer is lined in felt and the bottom drawer in cedar, and each drawer runs on side-mounted ball-bearing guides. The case sits on a separate low stand with four tapered legs. Style it with cognac leather and charcoal linen for a loft feel, or with white plaster and pale oak floors for contrast.
