Grows for the holidays. A 40-inch-wide rectangle in fan-cut walnut veneer that seats six at 76 inches and stretches to 94 inches for eight with an 18-inch leaf that stores inside the table.
The top is walnut veneer laid in a fan on each half, so the slices meet at the centre in a large sunburst that shifts from light to dark as you move around it. A mitred border frames each half, and the edge steps down in two bands. Because the veneer is real wood, the figure varies a little from table to table, giving each one its own pattern.
Below, two thick angled slab pedestals, linked by one stretcher, make a heavy, architectural base, set about 8 inches in from the ends so there are no corner legs to work around. When the family arrives, open the top and set the stored leaf in place: no loose board to hide in a closet. Pair it with concrete and pale bouclé for a warm modern room, or with a Persian rug and marble for a classic one.
