Small hall, big character. A compact 39.4-inch bench in solid mango wood with bobbin-turned legs and arms, a chestnut finish and a padded oatmeal seat.

Bobbin turning is an old cabinetmaker's pattern, a row of round beads that catches the light, and Stefanaconi uses it on all four legs and both low arms. The rest stays plain, a flat apron and a moulded seat edge, so the turnings carry the look. The solid mango wood is finished in a deep chestnut, darker in the beads and warmer on the flat faces, with grain and tone that vary from bench to bench.

At only 13.8 inches deep it fits a narrow hallway, a landing or the foot of a bed without taking over the room. The low arms give you something to lean on while you pull on boots, and the padded seat in an oatmeal woven fabric lifts the dark wood. Set it under an old painting on a lime-washed wall for a country-house look, or against white panelling for a Parisian one.
