Black ash, no hardware. A tall 40-inch chest in burnished black ash veneer, with five soft-close drawers opened by channels carved into the wood.
The burnish is dark but never flat: ash has an open, lively grain, and a warm brown still glows in its pores under the near-black finish. The ash veneer is laid over MDF, rubberwood and laminated veneer lumber. Rounded front posts curve down into a rounded bottom rail, wrapping all five drawers in one soft frame above a recessed plinth.
There is no metal on the front at all: each drawer opens from a shallow channel carved along its top edge and closes softly on ball-bearing glides. The drawers are English dovetailed, the top one is lined in black felt for jewelry and watches, and a dust panel closes off the base. Style it against pale plaster with a cognac leather bed, or with oak floors and cream linen to soften the black.
